Kangaroo steak

So Lidl sell Kangaroo steaks and on the back of the pack it suggests to cook them for a whopping 16 minutes! So I thought I better set the record straight, because I wouldn’t want anyone to try kangaroo for the first time, cook them as directed and end up eating something that tasted like a rubbery old flip flop. So here’s how to cook the kangaroo steaks from Lidl…

These come frozen, so be sure to fully defrost them. I recommend defrosting in the fridge rather than leaving them on the counter. Unfortunately, whilst they come in two pouches (pardon the pun 😉), the steaks come in approx five separate pieces. So to cook each piece for 16 minutes would totally ruin them. Heat your frying pan on a high heat and add a good amount of your preferred oil and sear the kangaroo on one side for 3 minutes, turn and cook for a further 4 minutes, lowering the heat to medium. Kangaroo is a very lean meat so you really have to watch the heat of your pan as the meat can easily burn. I cook 2-3 of the small steaks, as you don’t want to overcrowd the pan and end up boiling them. Leave to rest the steaks for approximately 6 minutes. You will end up with lovely medium rare- medium steaks, which is how kangaroo is best enjoyed. Anything more than medium will result in a tough piece of meat. I suggest serving the kangaroo steaks with duchess potatoes, asparagus and a red wine reduction. Enjoy!
